Daigoji Temple Five-storied Pagoda (National Treasure) is the oldest wooden structure in Kyoto Prefecture, completed in 951 to pray for the repose of Emperor Daigo's soul. While the entire area was destroyed during the Onin War, only the five-storied pagoda miraculously remained. Although it suffered severe damage in the Tensho Earthquake, reconstruction progressed with the ``Daigo Cherry Blossom Viewing'' held by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in March 1598, along with the ruined precincts. Of the total height of 38m, the ring section accounts for 1/3 of the total height at 12.8m, and the five-layered roof has a large gradual decline and has a sense of stability, making it the most beautiful tower in Japan. It is one of the three famous pagodas in Japan, along with Horyuji in Nara and Rurikoji in Yamaguchi. It is a valuable wooden structure from the Heian period, and the murals inside are designated as national treasures as relics of Heian paintings.
