The Samurai are an almost mythical warrior caste in Japanese history. The Sengoku period (1467-1603) saw the rise of the Samurai, with the most famous attack occurring between the 16th and 18th centuries. With the Emperor and Shogun unable to control the many Daimyo, there was constant fighting between the various factions. At this time the samurai code (bushido) became much clearer and standards of fighting improved. Even the introduction of the maquette in 1543 was seen as an opportunity rather than a threat. Samurai Starter Army Box Set Includes: 1 Metal Mounted Samurai Commander (2 bits, horse and rider), 20 Samurai Horsemen, 40 Samurai Foot Soldiers, 40 Ashigaru Spearmen, 40 Ashigaru Missile Troops, 6 Decal Sheets (Takeda clan, 3 white, 3 black), 4 Leaflets 12pp Booklet "Daimyō Army Lists and Rules" and Cavalry Base Ashigaru (literally) were so named as to have lighter armour than the samurai. They also formed the bulk of the armies of the day. The samurai were expected to supply two of each armed ashigaru. Many of these would be armed with yari (spears). These are not modern European pike blocks, as ashigaru were trained to fight in loose formations. Battles were won by the ashigaru, especially when the cavalry was foolish enough to attack head-on.
