Hitler was confident of a short campaign, with the German army breaking through the Russian border in 1941. A heroic defense by a large Soviet army slowed the Nazi advance. What they lacked in quality, they made up sheer numbers of troops and equipment – Josef Stalin famously said, "Every quantity has its own quality." Bolt Action's Starter Army includes enough troops to make a large starter army for the bitter winter homeland defense pursuing the Eastern Front. The bitter fighting in Finland had taught the Red Army some hard lessons, where thousands of their men fell victim to frostbite. The later issued cold weather kits were warm, comfortable, and often padded or quilted with a thin overcoat that German troops envied nicely.
