The fishing method is to cast crosswise and mend when the tip sinks. Adjust the line shape to be straight and send the fly first. Once it has drained, just swing it slowly and retrieve it at the end. The fly drifts naturally, so the fish bite is natural, and if you move it slowly toward the bank, you will hook it firmly. Your image of wet flies as ``thick and hard to hook'' will surely change. This is a line you should try using your existing 9ft or so size 4-6 single hand rod. Aero Shooter 24LB is recommended for the shooting line.
