Product name: Premium rattan-wrapped jitte Weight: 460g Size: 39.5cm
A familiar tool for catching criminals in period dramas, this rattan-wrapped jitte is the finishing touch. The jitte is said to have originated as a weapon made by fixing two iron bars in a cross shape with hooks and spears attached, invented by Miyamoto Musashi's father, Miyamoto Munisai. It is thought that Musashi later perfected the jitte swordsmanship, which involves holding this in the left hand and a large sword in the right hand, by replacing the jitte with a small sword and using a large and small sword. It is said that the general jitte used in catching criminals became common during the Edo period. The police of the Edo period, such as yoriki and doshin, were short on manpower, so they had ordinary townspeople help them. However, these helpers were not samurai and could not carry swords, so they were given jitte. In other words, the jitte was both a weapon and a form of identification.
