Polar Bears on Ice - National Geographic Photography 500 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle. Finished puzzle size: 18" x 24". Made in the USA. Recommended ages: 7 and up.
Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) live along coasts and sea ice in the icy cold Arctic. When sea ice forms above the ocean in cold weather, many polar bears, except pregnant females, head onto the ice to hunt for seals, their primary food. Polar bears rest quietly in sealed holes in the ice, waiting for water to close to the surface. Polar bears sometimes swim under the ice to hunt. They are very strong swimmers, and their large front paws, which they use to paddle, are slightly webbed. Living in one of the coldest environments on Earth, polar bears rely on a thick coat of insulating fur that covers a warm layer of fat. Fur also grows on the bottom of the paws, protecting them from cold surfaces and providing good grip on ice. The bears' stark white coat is camouflage for surrounding snow and ice. But under their fur, polar bears have black skin - to soak up the sun's warming rays. In the fall, pregnant polar bears build dens in earth and snow banks, where they stay for the winter and give birth to one to three cubs. In the spring, the mother emerges from her den, followed by her cubs. The young cubs live with their mother for some 28 months to learn survival skills in the far north. Females aggressively protect their young, but receive no help from lone male mates. Polar Bears on Ice - National Geographic Photo 500 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle. Puzzle size when completed: 18" x 24".
