"Tango" has traditionally referred to the first day of the month, which is the day of the horse. However, since the custom of celebrating the festival on the same day in odd-numbered months, it has come to be limited to May 5th at some point. This day was designated as a national holiday, "Children's Day," in 1948. While the custom of bathing in iris to ward off evil spirits remains, the custom of displaying May dolls (May dolls) to celebrate the growth of boys has been passed down to the present day as a unique Japanese Tango festival event.
