Jizo Bodhisattva This Bodhisattva is a bodhisattva who edifies sentient beings in the six realms (hell world, hungry ghost world, animal world, asura world, human world, and heavenly world) from the passing away of Shakyamuni to the birth of Maitreya. Therefore, those who wish to offer a memorial service should obtain happiness in this life and be born into paradise in the future. Jizo worship began in the Tang Dynasty, and in Japan since the Heian period, and is often seen in the form of a monk, holding a jewel in the left hand and a shakujo in the right. Since the Kamakura period, it has been incorporated into folk beliefs, and is popularly known as Koyasu Jizo, child-rearing Jizo, Mizuko Jizo, and Roku Jizo.
