Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Buddha is so called because he was from the Shaka tribe in what is today Nepal. Shakyamuni Buddha was born to the king of this country, King Jyohan, and a Maya woman from the neighboring Koria tribe. There is some controversy as to his birth year, but in Japan it is often assumed to be 463 BC. The Buddha was born from the right side of his wife, Maya, while she was resting in Lumbini Garden on April 8th (Northern Buddhism Day) on her way to her parents' home to give birth. Then he carried it seven steps in all directions, north and south, east and west, and said, ``I am the only one in the heavens and the world, who removes all the sufferings that fill the world.'' Lady Maya died seven days after the Buddha's birth, and she was raised by her younger sister Makahajadai (later to become the first Buddhist nun). Afterwards, Shakyamuni Buddha was raised as a prince, and when he was 19 years old, he married his cousin, Princess Yashodhara, and they had three children (one of whom, Ragola, became one of Shakyamuni's top ten disciples).
