Fact: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a common mental disorder. Symptoms include attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Parents may notice these symptoms in toddlers, but ADHD cannot be properly identified until age 4. It is often diagnosed in elementary school, when it becomes clear that children do not pay attention, are overly mobile, and develop other problems. In teenagers, symptoms of hyperactivity such as fidgetiness, restlessness, and impatience become more evident. For adults, impulsivity, inattention, and other aspects of ADHD can impact daily life. Correctly diagnosing ADHD is important and often difficult, as many of the key symptoms resemble everyday child behavior. Parents are often fed up with their children's unpleasant behaviors, such as not listening, being restless, having difficulty waiting, and being distracted. It can therefore be difficult to distinguish between normal age-appropriate emotional development and evidence of mental illness. Unfortunately, as with many mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, there is no definitive way to diagnose ADHD. Some mental health and medical professionals believe that ADHD is overdiagnosed. The increase in ADHD cases in recent decades has been staggering. In the 1970s, about 1% of children were thought to have ADHD. By the 1990s, the estimated rate was over 3%. Today, ADHD is thought to affect 5% of children and over 2% of adults. About twice as many boys (than girls). An even higher percentage of children are diagnosed than many experts deem appropriate. There is no doubt that ADHD is real, even if some are misdiagnosed and medicated, while others are not. Treatment is key to minimizing the risk of serious social, learning, and other mental health problems. We recommend that you do not propose medical therapies that promise quick results or easy explanations. What matters most is learning.
