The Red Army launched offensive after offensive to drive back the invaders, but nothing could stop them from sweeping across southern Russia and reaching the Volga River at Stalingrad. In bitter city-to-city battles in the autumn, the Red Army hung the Germans out to dry. Then, as winter set in, they launched an offensive that recaptured all they had lost.
