"First Rats" is an adventure board game in which rats from a junkyard aim for the cheese moon. Each player starts out as two mice navigating a junkyard path, collecting building materials, light bulbs, apple cores, and cheese. Building materials can be used to construct rocket parts. Each light bulb you earn advances your Light Cable by one space, increasing your future income. You can use the apple cores you get to increase the number of mice or store them in your burrow to get points for wintering. Also, by exchanging them for comics, you can obtain special skills that will be useful in later games. Along the way, helpers such as frogs and crows will open shops and exchange various useful items for cheese. You can also earn extra points by donating cheese to the Food Reserve for Flight to the Cheese Moon. The space program progresses in this way, and the game ends when one player places all four rats on the rocket or places the eighth scoring marker.
