The M4 self-propelled mortar (M4 MMC: Mortar Motor Carriage) is a vehicle based on the M2 half-track body, of which approximately 500 were produced in the early days of the war. The M2 half-track was equipped with an 81mm mortar and mortar shells in the rear personnel compartment, with a total of 96 mortar shells in each ammunition storage box. The 81mm mortar mounted on the vehicle was normally supposed to be lowered to the ground and then fired, but in an emergency it could also be fired from above the vehicle to the rear.
