Length: Approximately 290mm Width: 30mm Thickness: 10mm Material: Cedar board cut into straight grains
Cedar is the best material. Soft material is good, but softer is not necessarily better. It has a balance of hardness. Just because it's cedar doesn't mean it's good. From my experience, some types of cedar are more tenacious than others. When processing the mortar with a knife, it ends up looking crushed even though I use a well-sharpened blade. Sometimes the knives are not sharp. Such cedar fire cutting boards give the impression that the fire starter is poor quality. Observe the wood grain. Choose a board with growth rings running vertically. It is called straight grain. In addition, choose wood that is not too crowded and has wide grains. The ideal thickness is 10 mm, if not, 9 to 11 mm. If the material is thick, dig in and adjust the thickness. This thickness is acceptable for just starting a fire, but this thickness is more efficient. This is because if it is too thick, the wood chips will cool down and scatter easily when they fall, which will prevent them from storing heat. On the other hand, if it is too thin, it will penetrate before a spark can form. The tip of the fire pestle will stabilize more quickly if you narrow the opening of the ``C'' shape a little. When machining the mortar, carefully carve left and right so that it is symmetrical, especially making sure that the slope of the cut goes down smoothly. It is important to sharpen the edges with a well-sharpened knife.
