British infantry units were called sections. They usually consisted of 10 men and were divided into separate rifle and Bren groups. Each section was led by a corporal armed with a rifle or pistol and included a lance corporal in charge of the Bren group. All section members except the corporal carried ammunition for the Bren – 700 rounds in a total of 25 magazines. In addition, all men carried grenades. As the war progressed, additional weapons were acquired. Section leaders and/or second in command would be issued with Thompson or Sten submachine guns (although these were sometimes quietly “lost” to avoid becoming obvious targets for snipers). Later in the war, a second Bren was added to many veteran sections. Whether this was officially part of the issue or not. Canadian infantry sections were organized in the same way as British infantry units. In 1943-45, due to the Canadian practice of adopting MMGs and HMGs on a universal carrier, spare Bren guns were also available to some infantry sections. All three Canadian infantry divisions were trained to conduct amphibious landings. Canadians participated in the landings in Italy, Sicily, Dieppe, Normandy, the Breskens Pocket and the Crossing of the Rhine. The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division conducted so many amphibious assaults that it earned the nickname "The Water Rats" from Field Marshal Montgomery.
