Product explanation Henri Matisse was born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambregis, northern France. In 1887-88 he studied law in Paris. After he graduates he becomes a clerk at a law firm. In 1892, over the vehement opposition of his father, he entered the Académie Julien, and in 1898 entered the Paris School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Gustave Moreau. In this classroom, he met Georges Rouault, Albert Marche, and others. In 1898 he married Amélie Pareil. The next few years were the worst, both production-wise and financially. In order to supplement his family's meager income, Matisse took up work as a painter and decorator. In 1911, he went to Morocco and found inspiration in the landscape and people. He begins a series of ``Odalisques.'' In 1920, he designed the sets and costumes for Stravinsky's ballet The Nightingale. In 1943 he moved to Vence. He continues to create not only as a painter but also as a sculptor. 1948 marks the end of his painting career with his first major cut-out paintings (gouache, decoupe), a series of interior paintings. From 1947 to 1952 he was commissioned to decorate the Rosary Chapel in Vence. In 1951 he began producing paper-cut paintings. 1952 The Matisse Museum opens in Le Cateau-Cambrégis. He died in 1954 at his home in Vance. He passed away at the age of 84.
