About the Ford GT40 MKIV: This win was no fluke. Ford made sure of it. Specifically, it was painstakingly engineered for durability, engineered for speed… engineered to win. Every element of the MKIV was completely different from other GT40s, starting with where it was manufactured. The MKIV was built in the United States. Unlike its predecessor, the MKI-III cars, it was all manufactured in Europe. A company called Kar Kraft built the J-series chassis and created the newly designed, long, streamlined bodywork. The MKIV became the most radical and American variant of all the GT40s. Other modifications were made as well. A NASCAR-style steel tube roll cage was added as a direct result of beloved racer Ken Miles' tragic and ultimately fatal accident. Though significantly safer, the roll cage was incredibly heavy. Additionally, driver Dan Gurney was 6' 4" – too tall to fit in a standard GT40. So the team built the body of the car around him, lowered the driver's seat position, and built a "bubble" shaped piece on the roof of the car. This particular beauty, the red MKIV #1, was in the J5 chassis. Despite skilled drivers Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt, the red #1 was writed off and believed to most possible to the win. Dan Gurney often complained about its weight; it was some 600 pounds heavier than a Ferrari 330 P4. During practice at Le Mans in 1967, Gurney developed a strategy to keep the brakes on - very stressed under the added weight of the car. He would take the throttle completely off for a few hundred yards before the approach to the Mulsanne Hairpin (a famous high crash zone) practically coasting into the braking area. This technique (also employed by co-driver A.J. Foyt) saved the brakes but increased the car's record lap time.
