On April 1, 1987, the Japanese National Railways was split and privatized, and the Japanese National Railways Buses, which had previously been operated by the National Railways Motor Vehicle Bureau, were relaunched as JR Buses. Initially, each company was directly operated by the railway, but the Honshu companies were spun off one year later, and the three island companies were spun off one after another, and now all eight companies are operated as separate companies from the railway.
