Inspired by the melting ice of Lapland, the Ultima Thule was designed by the great designer Tapio Wirkkala, who has created many works during his over 40-year association with Iittala. A one-of-a-kind design that takes a long time and the soul of a craftsman to perfect the technique of creating a unique surface. Ultima Thule is an island in the far north that appears in legend. It is said that the ancient Greeks considered this island, covered in ice and snow, where the sun never sets, to be the end of the world. The great designer Tapio Wirkkala spent most of his career at Iittala, and is a versatile artist who has created nearly 400 pieces during his more than 40 years of association with Iittala. His most famous work is Ultima His Thule, which was inspired by the melting ice of Lapland. Thousands of hours were spent perfecting the blowing techniques necessary to create this unique surface.
