Stencils are fun for the whole family, but be careful not to get addicted. How to use stencils. Almost any paint can be used to stencil, but the two most popular types are acrylics and drybrush oils. Preparation Always make sure the surface you will be applying the stencil to is clean and properly prepared without using release paint. Instructions (may not be in Japanese). Lightly spray the back of the stencil with spray adhesive and place the stencil on the chalk line or registration mark. Paint: Dip a brush or sponge into the paint and wipe most things off with a kitchen towel. Too much paint will cause the back of the stencil to bleed and the pattern will have very lagged edges. Apply paint from top to bottom. Start at the outside of each stencil cutout and work your way to the center. Care Instructions: Wash stencils frequently in warm, soapy water. Especially when changing colors. Don't forget to check the paint on the back of the stencil. To remove paint from oil paintings and apply adhesive from stencils or brushes, soak them in Tenpentine for a few minutes.
